Summer Garden Maintenance

Landscaping is such an important part of the overall desirability of one’s home that good landscaping can have a profound effect on the value of a home. Dry and burned plants subliminally suggest lack of maintenance and buyers will automatically deduct the cost of anticipated repairs when deciding to make a purchase.

On the other hand, green lawns, healthy plants and vibrant flowers greatly increase the feeling of a lovingly maintained home, thereby decreasing a buyer’s anxiety about the hidden costs in purchasing a particular house. Additionally, lush landscaping makes a home more desirable to live in.

During the hot spells of summer, take extra care to be sure your landscaping has enough water. Edge and color plantings may need a extra drink on very hot days. Adding additional mulch around root stock will help hold precious water in. When mowing the lawn, cut it just a little higher and mow more often to reduce stress on the grass. Fertilize lightly according to package directions to encourage fall growth.

Bedding plants should be in full bloom now. To maintain the show, feed with a liquid feed,
being careful not to overfeed. Keep deadheading flowers to encourage additional blooming. Plants that go to seed will stop flower production before the summer is over. Pick up spent blooms and throw them away to prevent the spread of disease.

A healthy garden encourages visits by birds and butterflies. To further encourage nature’s visitors, bird feeders or special plantings can be added to the garden. Spending time in the garden watching the antics of nature’s creatures can be a delightful way of spending an hour or two (especially with grandchildren!)

Consider shading if you have problems with plant burn. Nurseries have many types of shading materials available and they can easily be adapted to your needs. SMUD will help with shade trees and where to plant them if you live in their district.

Protecting and improving your landscaping and allowing it to grow to its potential is a smart way to enhance the value of your home while relishing nature’s splendor in the summer garden. Enjoy!

Time for Garden Refreshing!

Use the following tips for April to bring bright blossoms and hearty vegetables to your garden all summer long:

  1. Fertilize plants—this is the time they are growing, growing, growing. They need food for energy and to produce.
  2. Repair and replace lawns as necessary. New varieties of grass use less water, stay greener and are more disease resistant than grasses of just five years ago.
  3. Plant an herb garden. These delightful edible plants can add fabulous flavors to your cooking, garnish to drinks, and even provide catnip for your kitten!
  4. Groundcovers should be planted now so they will establish strong root systems before the hot weather comes.
  5. Citrus , azaleas and other acid-loving plants may need an application of iron now, if the new leaves are yellow between the veins.
  6. Ladybugs and praying mantids will help control pests naturally. Check with your local nursery for tips on finding and releasing them.
  7. Use the coupon insert for all your nursery needs.

Happy Gardening!
